Summer Nationals
At the 2010 Summer National Championships held by the United States Fencing Association in Atlanta, Georgia (July 4 – 13, 2010), the Fencing Academy of Westchester of Hawthorne, NY earned the gold medal and claim to the title of national champions in the Senior Men’s Foil Team event. In a close match that went into sudden death overtime after time elapsed with the score tied at 43 apiece, Fencing Academy of Westchester emerged victorious against the heavily favored Massialis Foundation at Halberstadt in San Francisco, CA. This is the first time the coveted Senior Men’s Foil Team title went to a team from Westchester, NY.
The Fencing Academy of Westchester team members are Lucas Lin (White Plains,NY), Stephen Jan(New York,NY), Jeremy Goldstein (Westport,CT) and Kurt Getz (Rye,NY). In a tough quarter finals draw, the Fencing Academy of Westchester team found itself pitted against two highly regarded NYC teams, the New York Fencers Club and Empire United Fencing which both went down to defeat 45-24 and 45-42, respectively, and earned FAW a spot in the finals. In the sudden death, overtime, team captain Kurt Getz launched an aggressive consecutive lunge attack that finally landed on David Willette, anchor of the opposing team and sealed the victory for Fencing Academy.
In addition to the senior team title, Fencing Academy of Westchester members earned a total of 22 medals in one of its most successful nationals ever including gold, silver and bronze medals in the following events:
