It was fitting that Kurt Getz' lunge in sudden-death overtime lifted the Fencing Academy of Westchester senior men's foil team to the national championship in Atlanta, Ga. After all, he is the team captain.

The gold-medal match pitting the Hawthorne-based club against the favored Massialis Foundation at Halberstadt of San Francisco ,Calif., was tied 43-43 when Getz, of Rye, launched an aggressive consecutive lunge attack that finally landed on David Willette, anchor of the opposing team, and sealed the victory.

Getz also competed in the Pan American Championships in Costa Rica, where he placed sixth.

Also contributing to the first national title won by a Westchester team in Senior men's foil were Lucas Lin of Valhalla, and Stephen Jan and Jeremy Goldstein .

Jan left Atlanta with two gold medals. He also took first place in Division 1A men's foil.

Madelon Rosenfeld captured the gold medal in Over-60 women's foil.

Silver medals were earned by Audra Fox (Division 2 women's foil) and Riya Dave (Under-14 girls saber).

Stephen Mageras (Under-16 men's foil) and Matt Gallo  (Division 3 men's foil) each garnered a bronze medal, as did the Junior men's foil team of Lin, Goldstein, Victor Falkowski and Andrew Hsu.

The Senior men's foil team is coached by Vycheslav Grigoriev, head coach at the Fencing Academy of Westchester, who was also awarded the coach's medal for the team event.
